anti-racist education

Our anti-racist education strategy at Westdene School:

Promoting equalities through anti racist practice is one of the six main school development priorities for 2024-2025.

We are firmly on the journey of promoting equalities and anti-racist education in our school.

Actions carried out and future developments planned:

We have carried out the anti-racist education foundations training from Brighton and Hove’s anti-racist education team.

In the Autumn term the anti-racist education team are returning to continue to develop our staffs understanding and skills.

Our anti-racist leads have and will continue to attend the network meeting held by anti-racist education team at Brighton and Hove Council.

We are currently developing a comprehensive Anti-Racist Strategy Plan and Policy.

Assemblies celebrating diversity and promoting equalities are an established part of the school calendar.

Curriculum leads attended the decolonising the curriculum conference held in Brighton in June 2024.  Our existing curriculum has good representation; however we will be carrying out an audit and actioning its findings.

We have a trauma informed behaviour policy which clearly outlines the importance of reporting and responding to racist incidents effectively.

We aim to create a BRM pupil support group in the Spring term (2025) after we have trained specific members of staff to facilitate and guide this pupil led group.

An audit of images, books and materials around our school has been carried out to ensure we have excellent representation of all children and adults in the global community.  We have actioned the findings, and changes have been made and will continue to be addressed through further development of resources.

In the Summer term we aim to hold forums for the parents/carers of BRM children to come and discuss their ideas and observations.
